Got Wildlife? Removes Bees from the Newburgh Mall, Newburgh NY

April 28, 2010 — Got Wildlife? Recently removed bees from the Newburgh Mall. Bees that are not in their natural habitat may become a nuisance to those around them and can be lethal to those allergic. This creates a huge liability issue to the owner of the property. This was a situation where Got Wildlife? had to respond quickly to ensure that customers of the Newburgh Mall felt comfortable during their shopping experience. The Newburgh Mall is owned and operated by Urban Retail Properties, LLC based out of Chicago, IL. Got Wildlife? was extremely excited to provide services to one of the largest third party retail property managers in the country. “We understand that a commercial property manager desires a seamless experience for his/her tenants. We can interact directly with the tenant as an extension of the property manager, allowing the property manager to focus on his day to day operations. It’s part of our service to ensure that the tenant is satisfied.” Stated Dan Schwarzbeck, Co-Owner/Operator.

Woodpecker Control NY and NJ
The Downy Woodpecker

Spring is in full swing and the birds are out and about.  I love waking up in the morning to the sweet song of a Robin or Bluebird.  But I can definitely do without the pecking of the Woodpecker on my siding.   That pecking is known as Drumming.  In the spring, Woodpeckers will peck on a variety of resonant objects, such as a hollow tree or dry tree; aluminum siding, metal roofs, gutters, drainpipes, the trim and facia boards of a wood, brick or stucco building.  They will drum just about anywhere in order to proclaim their new found territories or to attract mates.  And if you have Cedar Shakes or clapboard or any type of wooden building, you could be in for a lot more than just the drumming.  Woodpeckers will use those types of materials to create small cluster of holes where they can perch.  They will also drill larger holes into wooden buildings to create roosts and nests.  These holes are only slightly wider than the bird.  They seem to prefer a hard outer shell and soft inner cavity, which they usually find in a dead tree or cedar building.  They will drill into the insulation, in which they’ll hollow out their nest or roost.  Woodpeckers often create several holes before settling down to business.  Nesting holes are typically excavated in late April – May. Roosts are usually created in the late summer through the fall as they prepare for winter.   If you are currently having any issues with Woodpeckers, please don’t hesitate to contact us at jenn@gotwildlifepro.com.  We have many preventative solutions to ensure that your wooden structures are protected.

Got Wildlife? LLC Launches New Enhanced Website

March 25, 2010 — Got Wildlife? LLC launched their new website this past week. The new enhanced website allows us to provide valuable information to the communities that we service in an efficient and effective manner. As we began to grow our business, we realized that in order to compete in this field, we needed to provide value above and beyond the typical service provider. We wanted the ability to do that, but still allow us the time and freedom to meet personally with existing clients and potential new clients. The internet and the use of a website allow you to provide that service without taking away from the personal approach that we enjoy. On the website you will find information regarding the wildlife that surrounds our service areas. Additionally, we provide some best practices as well as photos and descriptions of the animals. We have a monthly newsletter, Critter Comrades, that you can sign up for through our website as well as locate archived editions of the newsletter. This newsletter has a featured animal of the month that we discuss in detail and provide insight on how we can co-exist amicably together. We also provide information on Nature Programs and Nature Summer Camps in our service areas. On the site you will also find a blog. This blog was created to provide useful information regarding resolving human and wildlife conflict in a humane manner, to give fellow WCO’s some business insight and to open up discussions on controversial topics for our industry. “We worked with an incredible company out of Florida called HB Websites. They assisted us greatly in accomplishing our goals. They were creative, quick to respond and understand SEO. We highly recommend them at “www.Lusosystems.com.” Stated Dan and Dean of Gotwildlife?.

The Groundhog

groundhog

February 2nd , Groundhog Day, has come and gone, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and winter hung on for most of those 6 weeks. But what is so special about February 2nd? Well, February 2nd is considered “Cross-Quarter Day” which means the halfway point between the winter solstice in December and the Vernal Equinox in March. In many cultures the day is celebrated to signify the midpoint of winter….and the Groundhog? It is believed that the Groundhogs’ internal clock is affected by annual changes in daylight. Basically hormonal responses to cyclic changes in the production of melatonin, a sleep-related hormone is released and is thought by some researchers to be the signal to wake-up. Hence, as the days get longer, the Groundhog begins to stir and is one of the first animals to wake up from hibernation. And when the Groundhog wakes up, he is hungry. Groundhogs raid gardens, fields, lawns, orchards, nurseries and may gnaw or claw on shrubs and fruit trees. They will also chew on outdoor furniture, decks and siding while scent marking or filing their front teeth, which never stop growing. Groundhogs are amazing land engineers that can reek havoc on your foundation and cause incredible structural damage to your commercial or residential properties. We have watched them destroy some of the best landscape properties in our area. They typically burrow entrances among shrubs near vegetable and ornamental gardens; under woodpiles, brush piles, stone walls, under sheds, porches, decks and crawl spaces. Typically, their burrows will have many chambers and more than one entrance, sometimes up to three entrances. Although not aggressive, they will defend themselves and become aggressive if approached by humans or pets. Continue reading “Newsletter March 2010”

Should I take care of it myself?

Spring is upon us, love is in the air and the animals are looking for mates.  You can be rest assured, once they have done their business, they will be looking for a nice, cozy, warm, secluded place to give birth and raise a family.   You guessed it; your homes are all quite attractive locations.  Under the porch, in the attics and into your foundation are just a few places (of many) that are all attractive to the wildlife that surrounds our service area.

Thus, begging the question, should I just take care of it myself??I mean come on, I love nature and wildlife, I have had several pets in my life time, I used to catch frogs or snakes in my backyard..Why not??

You know, I just finished reading an interesting white paper on human/wildlife conflicts.  It was published back in 2007 by the Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator Association, but I would have to imagine the numbers have only increased since that time.

Did you know that……

  • In the US, metropolitan households (consisting of 160 million residents) suffered $4.4 billion a year in wildlife damage, despite spending $2.3 billion and 268 million hours trying to prevent these problems
  • Let’s conservatively value people’s (your) time at the minimum wage of $7.25, the total labor cost would be $1.9 billion.  Hence the total cost of wildlife damage (actual damage plus money and time spent to prevent the problem) to metropolitan residents equals approximately $8.6 billion
  • An additional 34 million households (consisting of 92 million residents) live in smaller cities, towns and rural areas.  Because wildlife populations tend to be higher in rural areas, I will assume that these households suffer at least as much from wildlife problems as do people living in large metropolitan areas.  This could mean that the total annual cost of wildlife damage to rural households (damage plus time spent to prevent the problem) would conservatively amount to $4.5 billion.

Ok, so basically, most people spend more money and many precious hours wasted on ATTEMPTING to get rid of the problem.  Don’t waste your time and money, Call GOT WILDLIFE?  LLC 1-877-Fur-Find

(1-877-387-3463). We professionally and humanely resolve wildlife and human conflicts.

If the economics aren’t enough to make you think twice of resolving the situation on your own, then perhaps you should consider the health and liability issues associated with resolving wildlife and human conflicts.  Some people may think, “What could that poor little squirrel do to me?”  Well, I assure you, they can do a lot. A two pound squirrel is nothing but solid muscle, large chiseled teeth and long sharp claws. We have seen those long sharp chiseled teeth chew through metal flashing and metal screening. Imagine what they can do to a finger or a hand if you try to grab them.  And if they do bite you beware, they carry Typhus and Rabies.

Or, how about a raccoon, they can get up to 30 plus pounds. Even though they look like a fat friendly teddy bear, they can be ferocious animals.  My husband tells me stories of how he has actually seen them pull up shingles and rip away plywood to create entrance ways into your attic.  He has seen them rip away siding and shred insulation to thousands of pieces.  Raccoons are extremely strong combined with razor sharp claws.  They have up to a six hundred pound square inch bite.  Raccoons are very unpredictable and extremely protective of their young.  Raccoons are the highest carrier of Rabies in New York State.  They also are large carriers of roundworm.  Why would you want to attempt to catch them???

Raccoons are Aggressive

And in closing, I just have to share this story.  My husband came home from work the other day and shared it with me…

I recently had a woman call to tell me she needed my assistance with some squirrels that moved into their attic. When I asked her if she was sure they were squirrels, she replied “yes I am sure they are squirrels. My husband did not want to hire anybody to take care of this problem and said he could handle it himself. Why should I pay somebody when I can do it myself? He put an extension ladder up against the house to get to the roof. He was about 25 feet off the ground where he was promptly greeted by a squirrel that shot out of the hole. It startled my husband and he fell to the ground. He suffered two cracked vertebras and was just released from the hospital.  I said ok, that’s proof enough for me and went out to their home to set up the job.

Don’t let that be you…

If you have a wildlife problem, please give Got Wildlife? LLC a call 1-877-Fur-Find (1-877-387-3463).  We are professionals at humanely resolving wildlife and human conflict.

The Skunk

Spring is approaching and the animals are preparing to get down. February is upon us and the skunks are one of the first animals in our service area to be out and about looking to mate. Once they have found there partner and done their business you can be rest assured they will be looking for a nice, warm and cozy place to hunker down and prepare to give birth. Your homes and businesses are a perfect match. Some great places that they typically choose to den up are your porch, under the decks, foundations, barns and sheds. Don’t get me wrong, skunks don’t hibernate, they sleep deeply for up to 3 ½ months at a time. They’ll emerge periodically during warm spells so you might have seen them around all winter long, they just tend to be less active during the colder times until they are preparing to mate. Some Hunters Worry About Longer Squirrel Season

One of North Carolina’s largest hunting groups is worried about a plan to extend squirrel hunting season.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that the North Carolina Wildlife Federation is concerned that extending the hunting season next year would leave baby squirrels as orphans in their nests.
